LifeLine New Zealand

  • Update for 09/03/2011

      9 March 2011

LifeLine in Christchurch is alive and well! All the staff and telephone?counsellors got out of the building safely.?Now, a?bit battered and temporarily homeless but struggling to get back to normal. The Christchurch centre is working out of a port-a-com in a car park; the national office staff are working from their respective homes. The 0800 number is being served by other LifeLine centres around the country. All calls to the Christchurch local number are being served by LifeLine Auckland. Many, many thanks to all those?kind?people who have sent good wishes; and to those volunteers around the country who are putting in extra shifts to make sure that the phones are answered.

Thank You to everyone who supported LifeLine during our appeal in February this year. LifeLine New Zealand receives no government funding for our service, so without your help we could not continue to be there for people from all walks of life at any hour of any day. The number of people calling LifeLine is increasing every day and we need your continued support to help us help people get through some of their darkest moments. For those of you who have donated this year - A Huge Thank You for Being a life line to LifeLine Check out our updated web site at www.lifeline.co.nz We are very grateful to hairy Lemon for donating their time and expertise to complete this update.

  • Update for 24/12/2009

      24 December 2009

Christmas isnft a happy time for everyone. Many people, especially the elderly, live alone and at this time of year feel particularly lonely. The absence of friends, colleagues, neighbours, family or caregivers can leave a person feeling depressed and socially isolated. Loneliness can be one of the hardest experiences a person has to deal with and can often lead to suicide or suicidal thoughts. Loneliness is not confined to the elderly or to those living on their own. A person may have lots of friends and acquaintances and yet still feel lonely. The loss of colleagues when being made redundant; the loss of a partner by death or break up; the empty feeling in a dysfunctional marriage; the knowledge that a small child is growing away from you when it first starts school; the empty-nest feeling when a child leaves home; moving to a new country or town ?? these can all lead to feelings of acute loneliness. Everyone feels lonely sometimes but usually they can reach out to someone and share their emotions. For those people with no-one close to reach out to LifeLine is there 24/7. Even on Christmas Day, there is a counsellor somewhere in New Zealand who has given up their free time to be there for someone in need of someone to talk to.
