Cycle Shanghai to Beijing for Type1 Research

$3,216 of $2,000 goal
Given by 43 generous donors in 5 weeks

PLEASE support Jape in his 1450km Cycle Shanghai to Beijing raising money for Stem Cell Research-A Cure for Type One Diabetes.

Otago

Spinal Cord Society NZ (SCSNZ) is a non-profit organisation conducting stem cell research in the Centre for Innovation (CFI) of the University of Otago.

The research involves developing cell culture methods for growing adult stem cells that have the potential to be used as a regenerative medicine, not only for Spinal Cord Injuries but also for auto immune diseases such as Type-1 Diabetes (T1D).

These adult bone marrow stem cells can turn off auto-immune responses which is why SCSNZ are interested in using them as a treatment in T1D. Many groups are investigating them for the same reason in a range of auto immune diseases.

From the library of bone marrow stem cells SCSNZ have now completed initial comparisons from the two groups (T1D and Non-T1 Control) across a number of properties.

The results that this project has thrown up are very interesting and SCSNZ will continue investigating further and aim to publish a second peer-reviewable paper in early 2017.

The information and knowledge gained and published, including methodologies, will prove to be an invaluable resource for educating fellow researchers who choose to expand research in this field and will help move us a step closer to clinical trial phase.

Made it!  31 May 2017

Jape and Gary have completed their journey from Shanghai to Beijing after an epic 146km ride yesterday, having biked a total of 1654kms. They finished their bike ride in Tiananmen Square. They have had a fantastic time in China and have met some great people along the way. They will be doing some sight seeing in the next few days, then on Sunday they will leave by Bullet train and reach their starting point in Shanghai. Jape and Gary really appreciate the support they have received from donations to the research for a cure for Type 1 diabetes.
