Playcentre Aotearoa

  • Update for 23/09/2013

      23 September 2013

Over the past 12 months we have been developing a national strategic plan for the whole of Playcentre - for Playcentre to survive and thrive in the future! Our goal is to ensure that the Playcentre parent-led model of early childhood education remains a viable and attractive option for future generations of NZ families. Playcentre is approaching a crisis point with financial challenges and workloads threatening the organisation - in our Playcentres, Associations and the Federation. We need to re-envisage Playcentre to meet the changing needs of NZ families. We need to find ways to address the administrative and compliance burdens now faced by Playcentre parents. We need to make Playcentre more accessible to Maori and Pacifica families. Over the next 2 years we will work on an on-going change programme and will invest in strategic action. While our plan is ultimately intended to address funding shortfalls, our organisation is currently financially stretched and we will face many costs as we proceed with change, including people to manage change and technology. Donations to Playcentre will help us create a strong future for Playcentre. Help us ensure that there remains an early childhood education option that focuses on family and developing parents as well as children.

Why does Playcentre need donations? Playcentre does receive Government funding as an early childhood education service, but because we're a largely voluntary organisation we receive less than other services. Our members contribute huge amounts of volunteer time to running Playcentre, however we still need to raise significant extra funding both for local Playcentre and to fund the work of the Playcentre Federation which supports Playcentres around the country.
