The Globe Theatre

  • Getting closer to target!

Recent donations and pledges have brought us well over our initial goal of half a million dollars and very close to the $550,000 we still need to cover all consultancy/consents fees as well as actual building costs. This has been a huge effort, one made possible only by the support of lots of people. So thank YOU!

  • End of our year

We closed the theatre last week with a last fundraiser for the year - and very successful it was too. An appreciative audience enjoyed the songs, poetry and reminiscences of life in early 20th century Central Otago - and the lavish 'shearer's tea' provided afterwards. We have now raised $465,000 of the $550,000 we need for the entire conservation repair of the theatre and so hope to start some of more urgently needed work in late January next year. We have already arranged to move into other premises while we are "in exile" and so will be working first in the PlayhouseTheatre (Verdict by Agatha Christie in March)and then in the Athaneum (Taking Off by Roger Hall in May and An Unseasonable Fall of Snow by Gary Henderson in July). After this we hope to be back in the Globe!

  • Update for 20/10/2014

      20 October 2014

Thanks to the generosity of many organisations and individuals during the last few months and the hard work of our members, we have moved even closer to the total required ($550,00) for all building work, including consents and consultation fees. Our latest fund-raising venture, an Open Day and Spring Fair held last weekend, brought in over $1000 and lots of people, many for the first time. We still need about another $80,000, however, and so will continue to stage other fundraising events and approach more possible benefactors so that we may start the building project as planned, at the beginning of next year. Meanwhile, we are hugely grateful for all of your support and good wishes.

We are getting closer to our goal of raising the $500,000 we need to carry out the urgently required conservation repairs to the theatre building. We have now raised $400,000 which is brilliant. Thanks to all of you who have contributed in any of the many ways possible, including this so-easy, so user-friendly donation site . We must reach our goal by mid October this year in order to secure all of the funds that have been pledged. So do please tell your friends, neighbours, workmates, families, etc, etc. Dunedin needs the Globe!

Austen's most devious 'heroine' is brought to life in the letters she writes to friends, family - and potential lovers - in this special Globe Theatre production. Audience members are encouraged to wear suitable Janeite costumes if they wish (and Globe theatre members may hire these, free of charge, from our extensive wardrobe).

      26 May 2014

The weekend's storm was not good for our roof and today's hail was even worse. We really need to get this fixed asap! However, the show must always go on and so our cast of 11 'schoolboys' and 'staff' continued to rehearse, despite the drips falling on stage. Opening night for The History Boys is this Thursday, 29th May. The bigger our audience, the closer we get to plugging those leaks!
