By New Zealand Aotearoa Adolescent Health and Develop Association

It's time to start planning your events for Youth Week 2010!

This year the theme is Rangatahi Ora = Whanau Ora.

Youth Week 2010 is about young people being connected to their whanau.

Youth Week's challenge is for everyone to strengthen their whanau by connecting their rangatahi.

Rangatahi are our future - embrace them, strengthen them, connect them!

Hoodie Day 2009

By New Zealand Aotearoa Adolescent Health and Develop Association

Goodie in a Hoodie

Show that young people are a positive part of your community

Organise a mufti day to mark UN’s International Youth Day & NZ’s Hoodie Day

Wednesday 12 August

Celebrate International Youth Day and Hoodie Day and join all other schools by holding a mufti day at your school on Wednesday 12 August, and raise funds for young people and older people in NZ.

Donate the funds you raise to Hoodie Day organisers NZ Aotearoa Adolescent Health and Development (NZAAHD) to show your support for other young people in NZ. NZAAHD works to support, inform and connect organisations that work with youth across New Zealand (www.nzaahd.org.nz). NZAAHD will pass on 10% of funds raised to their partner organisation Age Concern - to help show that young people care about their older people! Age Concern work to serve the needs of older people in NZ (http://www.ageconcern.org.nz/).

A representative from the group that wins our draw will be flown to Wellington to present a cheque to Age Concern on behalf of all young people in NZ.

Visit www.hoodieday.co.nz for more info.

Let us know what you are doing, send pictures and ideas to youth@nzaahd.org.nz

Bank the funds raised by your Mufti Day by Friday 14th August to go into the draw.

Relationships matter

45% of young people say they don’t get enough time with their parents. That’s why Youth Week 2009 is focused on young people and parents and other adults spending time together.

This 45% figure was a finding of the country’s biggest survey of young people, Youth 2007, which included 10,000 secondary school students. “This is big stuff. Much bigger than it sounds,” said principal researcher Dr Simon Denny. “Having a close relationship with a parent is one of the most important predictors of good health and wellbeing for young people”.

How you can make time for young people – quick ideas

· Start conversation about how amazing young people are

· Have a parent child afternoon tea in your workplace during Youth Week

· Get your organisation to hold a fundraising event (mufti day, wacky hair day) for a Youth Charity or donate to Youth Week

· Ask your own children or grand children what they would like to do and do it

Launch

Shortland Street actor Lee Donoghue (Hunter) and his mum have been confirmed for the Youth Week launch. Young people and parents will talk about the importance of relationships. The launch is in Wellington, Saturday 23 May 11am at Bats Theatre.
