Marcelo Chevonica needs your help!

  • Update for 31/03/2014

      31 March 2014

Thanks for all the donations! Marcelo and his wife went back to Brazil to continue the treatment closer to his family. He is continuing getting weekly treatment. His speech is still very affected. He speaks very few words. Walk has improved and now he uses only a cane. The right arm continues with small movements. We are still fundraising to pay the NZ$87000 bill from Auckland and North Shore hospitals. The latest fundraising act is a party we are promoting at Juice Bar on the 11th of April from 9PM. There will be 3 bands that Marcelo played with and 1 DJ helping to put this party together. It will be a fun night and I hope to see everyone there! Door will charge a minimum donation of $5 and we will have raffles on the night. Juice Bar is at 144 Parnell Rd, Parnell, Auckland. Check the flyer out

  • Update for 23/01/2014

      23 January 2014

Dear Friends, Happy New Year! Marcelo's end of year was good with some great improvements during the last few weeks. We took him out of the clinic for Xmas and New Years and enjoyed a few afternoons at the beach and at home. Also took him out for lunch and dinner with friends and had a picnic at the beach. His greatest improvement is that now he can walk on his own without much assistance. It's still a slow walk but with time we see him getting stronger and walking longer distances. The other day he started to walk without assistance, however just a few steps because he still needs more balance. The other good news is that he went for a surgery on Monday and finally got the bone flap put back on his head. The surgery went well and he is recovering really well. We are taking him back to Laura Fergusson today. We are also organising two events for the end of Feb. A second hand bazaar with a band playing and a party at Juice bar with two bands that Marcelo had played with. Soon more news about it. So that's it for now. He is still improving and soon should be out of the clinic. Thank you for the continued support and prayers! Juba

      17 December 2013

Great news! Last weekend Marcelo started to move his right hand and even sang a song! On saturday we exercised his facial muscles and the speech. He was able to say words, like ""no, yes, hi, bye"". Later he sang a very popular Brazilian kids song. The singing was low and he didn't pronounce all the words perfectly but it was a great victory to hear him singing. Funny to see the brain singing words but not speaking them. On sunday the biggest victory was seeing him moving his right hand, despite doctors and physiotherapists saying it would not move so soon, if at all. Proving that nothing is impossible, watch the video! Thank you again and please continue praying for his speedy recovery! :)

      13 December 2013

Dear friends. Marcelo is already settled at the Laura Fergusson rehab centre where he will stay for at least 3 months. Today he exercised the right arm which is still paralysed. At the end of the session he could lightly feel touch and pressure on his hand. Today he also said the word ""no"" 3 times. It was a very joyful moment for the mums who were present. He was very emotive and cried a lot. He is also relearning basic functions such as brushing his teeth, showering etc. It's impressive to see how the brain works like a hard drive, where the content can be erased and lost. However, what makes us more confident of his recovery is that day after day he recovers lost memories and relearn damaged functions. Regarding the financial situation, we were able to get NSH to pay for 1 month of rehab and put this bill on the top of the hospital NZ$37k bill. The money being donated will be used to pay for some of this bill plus for the Auckland hospital bill which will be around NZ$30k, including the surgery in Jan. We still have a lot to raise and we continue trusting in your generosity! May the Lord bless you all with lots of health and abundance! THANK YOU!!

Hi all, Marcelo's mum and mother-in-law have arrived safe and sound. They are already spending their afternoon at the hospital giving their love and care to Marcelo. Today we saw great improvements! Marcelo sat up on the bed by himself, stood up and moved his right leg a bit, relaxing and tensing the thigh making it straight. Later he dressed himself and gave little steps to sit on the wheel chair. We then took him to the gym to show where he is going to do some different exercises, specially on the parallel bar for walking. Our main goal this week is to move Marcelo out of the hospital because is costing us NZ$1500 per day! The clinic he is going hopefully this week is called Laura Ferguson and would cost us around NZ$400 per day. We thank you for all the prayers and support! These are really important for his recovery. We also would like to say a big THANK YOU for all of those who are making donations! You guys are amazing!! God bless you all!

GREAT NEWS! This morning Marcelo was able to move his toe on the right foot! We are so happy with his improvements. Still no movements on the right arm and no speech but we are confident it's just a matter of time. He is still at the North Shore Hospital and we are planing to move him to the Laura Fergusson rehab clinic. The NSH is costing us $1500 per night. Thank you again for your support and prayers!!

      27 November 2013

Hi all, just to keep you guys updated. Marcelo is at the North Shore Hospital since monday. He will stay there for a bit more than a week and then will be transfered to a rehabilitation house. He is still not able to move the right side or speak, however he is now trying to communicate more with us. We are writing some words on a paper and he apparently can read and motion yes or no. Slowly we are finding ways to understand him and make him more confident. We tried the iPad but he couldn't type or write on the screen. We are still fundraising to pay for his treatment. The NSH says they will try to find a rehab house that can somehow fund his treatment. I haven't heard from them yet. The bill for the Auckland Hospital is around $25k and we will have the NSH and rehab to pay yet. Our family in Brazil is working hard to fundraise through different ways. They have also created the (https://www.facebook.com/SOSmarcelo) page to keep friends updated. I will be posting in english over there too. We will start our activities here soon. There is a party on Saturday at Juice Bar and I will be there distributing some flyers to see if we can get more people donating or helping somehow. Some other friends are organising a second hand bazar and also some musicians and bands that Marcelo played with here in NZ are talking to organise a fundraising concert. His wife went back to work last night and I stayed there with him. Soon we will let you guys come and visit him, now that he is more aware of what happened and the journey ahead. Our family would like to thank you all SO SO SO MUCH for all the help, prayers, messages, donations, phone calls, hugs, every little gesture that is helping us a lot in this moment. I pray God bless you all with love, health and abundance! :) -- http://www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/sosmarcelo https://www.facebook.com/SOSmarcelo

Sunday, Marcelo was not waking up. Due to the large stroke his brain was swelling and the chances of surviving were very little. He needed urgent surgery to remove the top of his left skull to give space for the brain to swell. This was the worst day of our lives when we thought we had lost him. Marcelo stays for 2 days in the neurology ward recovering from the surgery.
