I’m building a catamaran out of recycled materials in New York to change our perception on waste. Donate to help me on my journey
Auckland
I believe that it is our responsibility to look after the earth. No longer can we pollute our environment the same way we have been for centuries. We need to look at waste in a different way. It really becomes a valuable resource when it is used in innovative ways.
In 2013, I was part of Kaitiaki’s first plastic bottle kayak expedition. We traveled 100kms down the Whanganui, New Zealand’s longest navigable river. We design and built our kayaks out of recycled bottles and reclaimed wood.
Over the next few months, Recycled Mississippi and Hubbub (my creative tech company) have partnered together to build a 21ft catamaran made of recycled materials. My role as part of this team is Construction and Lead of Integrated Technologies. We will be embedding sensors on board in order to measure the water quality. With this knowledge comes the power to make a change for future generations.
The catamaran will be launched on the United Nation's World Environment Day (5 June). We will sail the catamaran around the southern end of Manhattan to promote the importance of protecting of our rivers and oceans. Later in August, five adventurers will sail this catamaran on a 2,400-mile source-to-sea journey down the Mississippi, the longest river in the United States.
I have recently arrived and settled into the lovely neighbourhood of Yorktown and have begun construction of our catamaran. you can follow the journey here:
