Big day yesterday for Alec, very emotional as he left hospital for the Rehab centre....13 weeks to the day he was admitted and now it is onward and upward...the teams at Auckland Hospital were outstanding in their care and expertise and Alec has the best attitude imaginable...he will be back for another couple of operations in August but for now it is Rehab Plus in Carrington , Pt. Chevalier

  • 5 weeks on

Alec has finished with the ops for awhile and the doctors are now just waiting for the pelvis to knit together...four big breaks all pinned with a stabiliser....big metal meccanno rods holding in place whilst it mends....the stabiliser comes off ( depending on an X-ray) either in one week or three.

Alec hates the pelvic stabiliser as it prevents all movement and keeps him flat on his back, theoretically when that is surgically removed, he can sit up. The shoulder injury is going to take up to 9 months to heal properly...full movement. The ribs and fractured skull are fine.

The right leg has had heaps of work done, multiple tendon and ligament repairs...mechanically the orthopaedic surgeons are very pleased with their work but they said that the nerve damage is inoperable and Alec has no feeling in that leg from the knee down so his foot will drag.

There is foot surgery coming up for that but it is an unknown as to how the nerves can regenerate. The leg is a 20 week recovery. We are now past the five week mark. Alec has very emotional days but is generally very strong and brave.

  • The latest on Alec

      2 May 2017

Alec had the first orthopaedic operation...7 hrs.. on his leg, yesterday, by Bruce Twaddle and team. They harvested ligament/ tendon grafts from his good leg and attached and rebuilt his knee which was shattered. There will be a further op on his foot and possible/ hopefully repairs for severe nerve damage on his leg/ foot. He has been warned that the leg will be in some form of cast for 20 weeks. Meanwhile the rest of Alec's injuries are healing as well as can be expected....a long and painful road to recovery.

Love to all the family xxx

  • Mums update

      21 April 2017

Thanks to everyone for their heartfelt concern for Alec. It has been a week....so much has happened, it feels much longer. Yesterday the orthopaedics spent 8 hours pinning his pelvis together and today's op was his forth with another one on Saturday. I am really happy with the level of care and attention given to my boy, he is big and strong and very brave.

Alec woke up enough today to read all the wonderful, positive comments. It's a surprise to all of us as to how many there are and it is both overwhelming and humbling. I will keep you posted, Joy

Alec is holding his own and will be coming aware soon of what has happened to him.

A top orthopedic surgeon fly's in today to assess Alec and starts operating next Monday 24th April ...Alec's birthday :-(

The main threat currently is infection, as his wounds are open.
