I have accepted a 1 year volunteer position as a communications fellow with human rights agency International Justice Mission in Nairobi, K
Nationwide
I will be working in an advocacy role out in the community raising awareness about the help available to them. I will also be reporting on these cases as they go through court through radio and written articles. As IJM is an NGO, I need to raise an estimated $20,000 to cover expenses for a year.
Oh how things change 30 May 2014
So I just thought I would do a quick update to let whoever is following this know... This morning I received a call from IJM Washington. The terrorist attacks on Kenya by the Alshabab sect of Al Queda have increased greatly. Their bombs and intelligence have become very, very sophisticated and there is no way to predict when and where they will attack- they simply seem to be random attacks. Last week, there were two attacks making headlines- 1 in Mombasa and 1 in Nairobi, but from the sounds of it there are a lot of others we are not hearing about in the international media. Basically Alshabab, a Somali group, has vowed revenge on Kenya, and it is not safe. As a result, IJM has pulled its interns and fellows from its Nairobi office and has decided not to send anyone there. This means I will not be going to Kenya. However I have told them I still want to volunteer and they believe they have a place for me elsewhere. They will confirm the details by the end of June. I still need to raise funds, I just don`t know exactly where I am going. Thank you all for your support. I really appreciate it! Tania
