Quick summary:

Mira is only 22 years old and has recently been diagnosed with a rare form of melanoma. It’s an aggressive type of cancer that’s already in an advanced stage and may take her from us. We don’t want to lose her. We’re going to help her in any way that we can.

More about Help Mira:

We're raising money to help Mira fight cancer. The money will go towards Mira's treatment and to support Mira and her family while they're unable to work. A charity auction will be held at the Northern Steamship Company on Tuesday 9 February 2009. See www.helpmira.co.nz for details.

Celebrating the life of Mira Moo

By Running with Scissors

Dear friends of Mira star,

We will meet to celebrate her amazing soul and person this Saturday 20 February 2010. If you would like to join us this weekend please rsvp to farewellmira@gmail.com.

The ceremony will be held at Rapaki Beach (sunshine) or at the Christchurch Rudolf Steiner School (rain) and will start at noon. For the latest changes regarding the venue we will leave a message on the family's answerphone Saturday (call 03 942 2202).

We would like to give you an idea of what the ceremony will be like, what you can do to help and what needs to be organised.

Rapaki Beach is a sacred Maori site, and it is a huge honour that we are able to have the ceremony there. We all have to respect certain rules for the area e.g. no smoking. There is also just one toilet, at the carpark, that we must all use. And of course, leaving rubbish there is a no-go. Have a look at the following website to see where Rapaki Beach is: http://www.zoomin.co.nz/map/nz/christchurch/lyttelton/-rapaki+bay/. The ceremony will also be more like a picnic, there is no dresscode or anything formal like that. If you like, dress up in something Mira would have loved. We will provide some finger food, tea and coffee.

We would appreciate if you could organise accomodation and transport yourselves, maybe you could help each other. But of course, if there's an emergency or if you have any questions, we we'll be here to help (Jerome: 027 379 96 45). To get to Rapaki, you could share a taxi or take the bus www.metroinfo.org.nz/timetable_28.html. If someone gets lost, we will help and pick you up.

Also, if you would like to share something with everybody attending, if you would like to perform or say something for Mira and you already know, please tell us. There will be time and place for people to say something spontaneously as well. Unfortunately there is no electricity at Rapaki, so instruments would need to be acoustic.

If you have beautiful pictures of Mira (she was a beauty so there will be thousands, we know...), please send them to farewellmira@gmail.com so we can spread them around.

What else to bring:

- Personal tea cup. we all know how much Mira loved beautiful tea cups and this way we do not generate any rubbish.
- Please bring your own water supply for the afternoon (meant to get hot!)
- To support us, please bring some thermo's with hot water for tea and coffee.

Up to you:

- A portable wee stereo and beautiful compilations to listen to.
- Swimsuit, sunblock, towel, blankets to sit on.

It is up to you how long you stay, feel free to come and go as you please. We are thinking that perhaps we could all go to the Wunderbar after.

The charity auction was a huge success

By Running with Scissors

The Mira Reil Charity Auction was held on Tuesday 9 February.

It was an amazing event. Thank you to everyone who supported it with time, items or attendance.

We raised $52,286.00 from the auction itself. This is an incredible amount to raise in one night and there is more to be added from the ticket sales and the raffles.

Mira and her family have expressed their deepest gratitude for everyone’s efforts and generosity. We would like to do the same.

This is not the end. We’re still collecting money here as treatment continues.

But for now, here is a big thank you to everyone who has contributed so far.

Mira's treatment

By Running with Scissors

Everything is coming together for the charity auction on Tuesday 9 February.

Thank you to those great people and businesses who have already given so generously in terms of time, money, auction items and the buying of tickets. Supporting Mira and her family has been much easier thanks to the help and support of so many kind people.

All the time and effort of the Reil family is being dedicated to healing Mira.

Mira’s cancer has not responded to traditional treatment and the family are trying an alternative treatment developed by a naturopath in Perth who had melanoma himself about 15 years ago.

The regime is based on four main factors
1. An alkaline diet
2. Targeting the cancer
3. Detoxing the body
4. Supply the body with sufficient vitamins, enzymes etc so it heals.

1. It is vital to make food and water as alkaline as possible so that the body gets to a neutral state. Mira’s diet has been changed to an almost 100% alkaline diet. All the conventional medication (mostly pain killers) is acidic, so they need to be very strict with food etc.

2. There are substances that work directly against the cancer. Mira is currently taking Vitamin B17 capsules (a substance derived from apricot kernels) mixed with shark cartilage. This has to be applied three times daily. Red Fruit Oil from Indonesia, which has cancer killing substances, is being used as well.

3. To get rid of the toxins (general toxins, toxins from chemotherapy and also toxins from the destroyed cancer cells) Mira ingests a mixture of sodium chlorite and citric acid which works as a “disinfectant”. These are drops, with the dosage being increased slowly over time as the body tends to react with vomiting and/or diarrhoea.

4. To provide the cells with sufficient vitamins, enzymes and minerals Mira uses nine different powders, capsules and fluids.

The approximate cost of this treatment is $2,500.00 per month.

On top of the treatment the family has had to spend a significant amount of money to make Mira as comfortable as possible.

Because of the tumours, Mira’s spine has been damaged and travel is incredibly painful. Thomas and Christine (Mira’s parents) purchased a more suitable car which sits higher off the ground (making it easier for Mira to get in and out of the vehicle). The car also has soft suspension which limits the impact of travel to and from hospital.

Mira is also kind of trapped in her bedroom as there are 5 steps to get up to the hallway and another 5 steps down to the kitchen/dining area and lounge. The other bedrooms in the house are even less suitable but if the deck is extended Mira will be able to sit in a wheelchair and get to the living areas via the outside. This will be a huge extension to her surroundings.

Mira is also getting counselling once a week.

Neither Thomas nor Christine are working as they have dedicated all their time and energy into Mira’s healing and wellbeing. Unfortunately their general living costs continue as well while they try to save their daughter. The costs are mounting.

Please keep helping.

A message from Mira's parents

By Running with Scissors

As most of you might know our beautiful 22 year old daughter Mira has been diagnosed with metastatic melanoma in early October last year. She is seriously ill and there is no conventional treatment available that can stop this disease. We took her over to Melbourne end of last year to get her on a drug trial, unfortunately she was not eligible. The only hope left is trying out some alternative treatment. Sometimes you hear from people who have made it, who could fight the cancer, against all odds. This is what we are hoping for - that she will be one of these people.

Getting this medication for her will cost us a fortune and if there is anyone amongst you who can donate a little bit, this would be a big help for us. One of her friends is organizing a charity auction in Auckland and she also has set up a website for donations. If you are interested, please have a look at www.helpmira.co.nz.

We also wanted to thank everybody for thinking of us in this hard time. This is the worst that has ever happened to us and keeps reminding us that no-one should take anything for granted. To all of you with kids: we all know that they can drive you nuts sometimes. But just keep loving them with all your heart, cuddle them whenever you can and be grateful for every day they light up your life. Because you never know what's around the next damn corner.

Best wishes
Thomas & Christine Reil
