Carrie's Cancer kicking Crusade.

      2 December 2013

Enter details of your update here Glenn & I found out on Friday that I am cancer-free! Being told in August 2012 that I had cancer was a massive shock, but being told at the end of May this year that it was 'terminal' and 'incurable' was an even bigger shock. But we chose not to believe the medics, and chose a path of believing that I could be cancer-free. On top of the palliative chemo and the unfunded complimentary drug (Avastin) that I have recently finished, I have been working really hard with 'lifestyle medicine' to heal myself from cancer - nutrition changes, juicing, meditation, imagery etc.. I had a scan and internal last week, and to the surprise of the medics, there is no evidence of any cancer anywhere! So celebrations were had on Friday night - its all very exciting! Everyone's support to me has been absolutely inspiring... as has a book a very special person sent me ""Mind over Medicine"" (by Dr Lissa Rankin), and attending a Cancer Programme at the Gawler Foundation in Melbourne in August this year. We also attended a follow-up retreat in Wanaka the other week, run by Ian & Ruth Gawler themselves. We learnt some amazing things, and will continue on with the lifestyle changes that we made. All the visits from people, catch-ups, messages and calls and emails of support, all the encouragement, prayers, thoughts, positive energy and healing vibes sent, has been so supportive and inspiring. Thank you all for believing in me! It has really all played a huge part of my healing journey. The fundraising page that the amazing Sue Harris & Jennie Burrowes set up for the huge Avastin costs, has been absolutely incredible. So thank you so much for all the donations from all around the world - from people I know and people I don't! Many incredible fundraising events have been run, not just in NZ(!) - it has blown us away. It was really hard to get my head around accepting money, but we are so grateful - from the bottom of our hearts - for everything. There are soooo many people to thank - but Glenn has been right by my side the whole time, through the worst of it and best of it. He is my soul mate, best friend, my absolute angel of strength - I am so looking forward to marrying him in March! This journey has taught Glenn & I so much, and we look forward being able to pay it forward and help others. With hope and determination, I think anything is possible, no matter how tricky the road seems. Life is good! Lots of love to you all, from both Carrie & Glenn

      23 September 2013

Thanks for your continued support, prayers, love, energy and good vibes! Glenn & I both had an amazing time at the Gawler Cancer Retreat. We learnt SO MUCH about things that I can be doing for myself, to help heal my body - it was all really positive! We are forever grateful for the things that we learnt and have taken on board for my healing journey: e.g. nutrition, meditation, exercise, mind-medicine, stress, emotions, laughter - just to name a few things. It was all very science based, and very interesting... and full of hope!!! My treatment side of things is going well too. We had a bit of a hiccup and delays with chemo because of my blood levels... but we are back on track again now - and have two rounds to go. Thanks once again everyone, your support means the world to us both. Love Carrie & Glenn

Time for some good news - my mid-treatment CT scan shows that my body is healing. My doctors are pleased that the lymph nodes and cervical tissue is responding well to the treatment (and all the other things we are doing to help my health). So we will carry on with the treatment as planned - another 3 rounds of treatment to go. Thanks everyone for all your love support, we are so grateful! We are smiling! Love Carrie & Glenn

Firstly, thank you so much (more than words can say) for everything. We just wanted to let you know the finer details of the plan of attack.... Our chemo specialist has said the best chemotherapy I can have is a combination of Paclitaxel & Carboplatin, as well as Avastin. I would have these drugs every 3 weeks, over a span of 18 weeks. We are looking at starting this treatment sometime the week of 17 June. The Avastin drug is the un-funded drug, we've been told its approximately $5K per dose. However, the chemo specialist is writing to Pharmac to request compassionate funding, since my case is so unusual. We are also really keen to to go to the next Gawler Retreat 26 August - 5 September. The chemo doctor has confirmed that it is fine to plan to go - and chemo can be worked around it (it looks like the dates happen to work perfectly anyway). Potentially there is also a follow up in Wanaka on 18-22 November as well. With all of the above - and everything we can do to keep my body & mind healthy, we believe we can absolutely beat the cancer. In regards to the donation page - we are blown away by it. Thank you a million times over for all your love, support, thoughts, vibes, prayers... xxx Lots of Love, Carrie & Glenn
