The Aramoho Wanganui rowing club recently suffered great damage due to the flooding that affected the Wanganui-Manawatu region. While the building has been classed as structurally sound the whole inside of the building needs to be rebuilt. This includes a large area downstairs and then the hall and lounge upstairs. The club needs to raise $25,000 to be able to pay the excess for insurance.
The club has a great history and is a very successful rowing club. This past season at Nationals the club won the Centennial scull which is the trophy for the top sculling (two oars) club. To win this award you gain points from your results in the events entered.
We got 8 Gold medals, 2 silver and 2 bronze ranging from age group (u19 events) through club and senior showing a good ability at many different levels.
The facilities that Aramoho wanganui have provided for us to train have allowed for us to be that successful and with your help we will be able to rebuild the shed as soon as we can to ensure that we will be on our feet and ready to go before the season starts.
To put the damage in perspective the river raised around 15m entering the top story of the sheds, this is the first time this has happened. Not only did it enter this level but the water raised to a level that was higher than the slide of the ergs and entered the bottom of the erg fans. Our club also just recently purchased new gym gear which was on racks that also got wet. The carpet in the lounge has been removed and the floor will need to be lifted too. The kitchens have been ruined with damage to all the fridges and other appliances used. The walls all need to be removed as the batts behind them are saturated. Basically the whole shed needs gutting and this is a hard task. We have been holding working bees since the flood.
The flood also ripped up our eights pontoon and washed it about 20m downstream. These pontoons are worth around $40,000 and will take a huge effort to get it back to where it needs to be. While we don't have this pontoon it will be hard to go for rows in big boats (4's and 8's)
Not only is this our club home but this is the home of Wanganui high school rowing and Nga Tawa rowing with both schools achieving top results at Maadi Cup.
To many of us athletes and the parents of us athletes the sheds become a second home due to spending so many hours there throughout the season and it has been hard to come to terms with.
Im involved in this as i am an athlete for the Aramoho Wanganui Rowing club. Without the facilities that were provided for me this season i would not have been able to have the most successful season of my career with 3 national titles of my own plus a handful of other medals.
