Upgrading the 1st XV field at CBHS along with a new grandstand to provide a top quality community facility
Canterbury
Construction is nearly complete on the John Morrissey Grandstand. Aligned with the grandstand reconstruction is an upgrade of the playing surface. Donations of $200 or over will be recognised with a named seat (please give details of what you would like on the seat).
John Morrissey attended Christchurch Boys’ High School from 1953 to 1957 he played for the first XV and scored three tries against Otago Boys’ at Lancaster Park in the curtain raiser to the 1956 Springboks Test Match. As well as a rugby player John was an excellent athlete and in 1959 he broke 49 seconds for the 440 yards. John played rugby on the Wing for both Otago and Canterbury and in 1962 played three test matches against Australia.
John forged a successful business career, primarily in the electronics industry, and he had a significant involvement in the Hohepa foundation which provides accommodation and support to people with intellectual disabilities, as a donor, fundraiser, board member and chairman.
Shortly before his death in July of 2013 John donated money to build a grandstand fulfilling a promise he had made to himself many years earlier.
We hope to further enhance John’s gift by upgrading the 1st XV playing surface and enhancing this community asset.
