Empowered Learning Trust

1 in 5 students in our schools are affected by a learning or processing difficulty which can limit their ability to access their education.

Bay of Plenty

We screen young people in the Central North Island region for visual, auditory and learning processing difficulties such as Irlen syndrome, a common visual processing disorder which makes reading difficult and stressful.

Since 2012, more than 2,100 students have undergone basic screening, and around 800 referrals have been made for further optometric and Irlen testing. More than 450 sets of corrective lenses and Irlen tints have been fitted and over 780 students have been screened for Auditory Processing Disorder in schools. Around 190 students have been referred o to an audiologist for further assessment, and 290 students have participated in APD support programmes to improve their hearing ability.

More about us

We turn learning difficulties into SUPERPOWERS!

We are a Charitable Trust that looks after 22 schools in our area by providing FREE screening and treatment services for Dyslexia, Irlens Syndrome and Auditory Processing Disorder. These services are not government funded, despite these learning challenges affecting 20% of children and they cost a LOT of money for families, without our help. We pay for in-school screening programmes, diagnostic appointments, optometric and Irlens glasses and training programmes to fix cognitive weaknesses that make up these learning difficulties. We work collaboratively with schools and other community groups to ensure that young people have the resources they need to reach their true potential, at no cost to their families.

Our operating budget this year is over $235,000 and we have to come up with all of that money ourselves, via grants and donations.

WE NEED YOU!!!

If you are keen to see our children achieving their very best at school, being confident in themselves and having great self esteem, if you are keen to see today’s children having a better time at school than you did, please help us out. If you want less poverty, crime, better employment prospects, more capable employees, increased mana and access to healthcare in our community, please consider changing a child’s life today!
